Proofreading and editing

Proofreading is the final stage in a document's pre-public life. It is concerned with checking a text against defined publishing standards. An example of a publishing standard is New Hart's Rules. Proofreading is about fine typographic detail. It is not about correcting language: that is 'editing'.


Editing at its most fundamental level is about correcting errors. However, editing is also about making a text stylistically appropriate for its readers. For instance, a PhD does not use the same style as a marketing campaign or business case.


If you are not a native English speaker your text will probably need some editing.

Andrew Tweedie

Andrew Tweedie is a writer and editor whose experience ranges from writing articles, press releases and key business documents to drafting public guidance for major political institutions.

He now runs silberzeilen.de which advises businesses and academics in Berlin on English usage. His recent work has included large business cases, subtitles for film and academic papers, including on design for space vehicles and economics.

Andrew studied politics, policy and government, cultural history and music at the universities of London and Cambridge.

He teaches the DDP seminar 'English for PR Professionals'.
